Alexandrite
Alexandrites are a unique and rare gem and are famous for their color-changing abilities.  They often appear green in daylight and reddish or violet in artificial light.
MYTH:
Alexandrites are named after Russian Czar Alexander II.  Their color-changing abilities were once thought to be evil, but are now seen as good omens.
Pearl

MYTH

Pearls have traditionally been seen as represenations of chastity, purity, and modesty.  They symbolize a happy marriage.

Pearls are a product of an oyster's defense mechanism; they produce layers of a substance called 'nacre,' which forms the pearl.

There are several different kinds of pearls, the two most common being Akoya pearls, which are have the classic spherical shape, and Fresh Water pearls, which best known for their small, odd shapes (comparable to Rice Crispies).  Akoya pearls are cultured within 12-24 months, while fresh water mollusks take two-six years to produce a pearl.
