Birthstones Print E-mail

Most gem scholars agree that the tradition of birthstones arose from the "Breastplate of Aaron" (shown left), a ceremonial religious garment set with twelve gemstones to represent the twelve tribes of Israel. It also corresponded with the twelve zodiac signs and the twelve months of the year.

Today, birthstones are looked to for a sense of identity, their symbolism, or their healing powers in addition to fashion.
