|  | |  | AMETHYST | | Amethysts are a type of quartz and are found in purple hues from a pale lilac to a deep, rich purple. The rich deep violet color is generally the favorite and most expensive, but a stone of medium color intensity, with plenty of sparkle, can also be very attractive. The royal purples of Amethyst were treasured possessions of emperors, kings and queens throughout recorded history. Occasionally, Amethyst and Citrine are found in the same crystal of quartz. These rare stones are called Ametrines, and are found in only one mine in the world. The Anahi Mine in Bolivia first became famous in the seventeenth century when a Spanish conquistador received it as a dowry when he married a princess from the Ayoreos tribe named Anahi. Ametrine was introduced to Europe through the conquistador's gifts to the Spanish queen.

They are also thought to prevent intoxication: ancient Greeks often drank from amethyst cups to ward off drunkeness. Amethysts are also said to protect its wearer from evil spells, treason, and deceit; Leonardo Da Vinci wrote that the gem dissapated evil thoughts and quickened intelligence. | | |
