Aquamarines are a relatively hard gemstone. Its color ranges from a pale to medium blue, occationally with a greenish tint.
Aquamarines are often heated to enhance its color.
Appropriate to its color, 'aquamarine' in Latin translates to 'sea water.' For centuries, this stone has been symbolic of ensuring sailors' safety at sea. Legend has it that the aquamarine's power is particularly strong when immersed in water (when sailors need its protection the most!). It is also said to be a treasure of mermaids.
MYTH:
Aquamarine is said to re-awaken love in long-married couples and signify the making of new friends. Wearing an aquamarine brings love and affection.
The ancients believed the gemstone imparted courage to the wearer and cured laziness. It is also said that they help in winning disputes, protect one from slander, and quicken one's intellect.
